The Huotari family society

There are about 3600 Huotari named people in Finland and about 700 of them live in Kuhmo. The Huotari family society was founded 1st August 2001 in Kuhmo, Finland. The society has about 590 members. The last family festival was held in Kuhmo 5.-6.7.2008. The meeting included the publication of the new family book. After that in summer 2009 a family meeting was held in Sotkamo. The next family festival will probably be held in Oulu in summer 2011.

The society members have one common ancestor, Tuomas Huotari (Thomas Hothare) the first Huotari in Kuhmo, who was born between 1559-1567 (before 1577). According to Ilmari Huotari's research: "Tuomas was probably born in Uusikirkko, Karelia and moved to Kuhmo between 1595-1604". Tuomas settled down in the Lammasjärvi village and appeared in the taxregisters in 1606.
