There are nowadays some hundred Wright family members in Finland. The history of the Finnish Wright family dates back to a Scottish salesman, Georg Wright (1630-1694). He moved from Scotland to Estonia and lived his life there with his wife Anna Walding (163?-1694). They had at least one son, Henrik Wright (1685-1766), who moved from Estonia to Finland.
Henrik Wright was an officer in army of Sweden-Finland. Because of his soldier career his life story is quite well documented. He had at least seven children. All his three sons (and some of their descendants) became officers, too.
All sons of Henrik Wright rose to the nobility. That is why there exists also a von Wright family in Finland. Our family descends from the sons of Nils von Wright (1734-1799) and Johan Petter von Wright (1732-1813). They were not of nobel birth.
Many descendants of Nils and Johan Petter Wright translated their name Wright into a more Finnish form: for example Vajanto, Välisalo, Virkula, Valkama, Rihtelä, Niiniketo or Ruotimo. Wright as a Family name still exists in Finland, too.
We are very interested in our roots and relatives in Estonia and Scotland. Please, contact us for further information:
